Ariella Myers is eight years old and lives with her two moms, little sister, and two cats in New York City. Winter has inspired her to learn more about dolphins – and most important, to never give up. Ariella hopes to one day visit Winter in person, and write a book about their encounter.

From Book to Silver Screen: Winter’s Tail (the book) to A Dolphin Tale

Winter’s cinematic debut in “A Dolphin’s Tale” opened last Friday to rave reviews and a very impressive showing at the box office! It is a wonderful film starrring Winter herself and a who’s who Hollywood cast. The movie, while a fictionalized version, captures Winter’s indomitable spirit in real life. In fact Winter’s true story almost reads like fiction but whether you see her in person at Clearwater Marine Aquarium or at your local theater (in 2D or 3D) Winter will surely steal your heart. Congratulations to David, Abby and the entire staff at CMA and above all to Winter! Well done.

Winter’s Tail is Coming to the Silver Screen

Alcon– the folks who brought you the Oscar Winning “Blind Side” — along with Warner Brothers–will be releasing a “Dolphin’s Tale”– a somewhat fictionalized version of Winter’s true story is coming out in 3D in September.

The man behind many of the amazing photographs from Winter’s Tail, J Carrier, shares his experience photographing Winter. Check out his website http://www.j-carrier.com and read his blog entry below:

“About a year ago i traveled down to Clearwater, Florida to photograph winter the dolphin for Turtle Pond books. Winter was rescued off the coast of Florida as a baby dolphin after she lost her tail from becoming entangled in crab nets – in very bad shape, she was not expected to survive.

But survive she has, becoming a source of inspiration and strength for people around the world. With the hope that winter will be able to live a more dolphin-like life, engineers from Hanger prosthetics and orthotics have dedicated themselves to developing a prosthetic tail for her; having made more than 6 tails for winter, the engineers have in the process developed revolutionary new techniques and applications for prosthetics that are now being used with human amputees.

The book, by the NY Times best selling authors Craig Hatkoff and his two co-authors/daughters Juliana and Isabella, came out about a month ago, and it looks great. there’s also a crazy-fun interactive website with games and create-your-own video and music sections, and all this will soon be followed by “Winter’s Tail” the Nintendo game! who woulda thunk it?!”

Winter’s Tail Webcast: Today Was an Amazing Day!!!!!!!!!

I just got home  (a little before midnight) from an amazing day in Clearwater Florida.  After months and months of planning we went live with our Winter’s Tail Virtual Field Trip which aired live from Clearwater Marine Aquarium.  The webcast was picked up by nearly 12,500 schools across the country  (and across the globe) reaching an estimated 350,000 students.  We’ll have lots to report on and tell you all the behind-the-scenes stories but just wanted to thank everyone who watched and everyone who helped put the event together.
It was very special for me because  I finally got to meet  two extraordinary young people, McKenna and Brandon,  after hearing all about them and how they were inspired by Winter.  Special thanks to Billy Dimichele and everyone at Scholastic who did an extraordinary job putting this whole thing  together.
As a special surprise we also gave all the kids that came to the webcast a free Nintendo DS  as a  gift from Winter complete with it’s own  special Winter label and they will all get the DS  interactive storybook and videogame  the second the factory finishes burning the cartridges.
I also want to specially thank Glenn Rockwood and Tobi Saulnier and hteir teams who made theWinter’s tail Nintendo DS possible in what must be record time.  I think everyone will love the DS interactive story book and the games that reinforce Winter’s valuable lessons.  JUliana, Isabella and I had a great time doing the voice over for the interactive storybook.
I am so tired I can  barely keep my eyes open but this was a day to remember!  Be back soon with lot’s more but now I need to get some sleep.
